Tyrone Daily Herald, Pennsylvania
July 26, 1924
Gates, Pa., July 26. -- Ten miners were killed in an explosion at the Gates mine of the H. C. Frick Coal and Coke Company last night. The bodies were recovered early today.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. A squad of mine inspectors of the state bureau of mines, are making an investigation and it is believed the blast was purely "local." The mine was damaged very little, it was said.
The dead are:
Walter L. Covington
One hundred and twenty men were in the mine at the time of the explosion and all were accounted for except the ten who were killed. Six of the men killed in the blast were known to be married, with large families.
An explosion in the Gates mine in February 1922, killed 25 men.
